5 insider tips on how to get in the news

How to get into the news

By Rebecca Colvin

Boudica Marketing

June 5th, 2023

Did you know that the news constantly seeks new information, creates content, and feeds it to the masses in multiple ways, including websites, social media, email, TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines?

News coverage has the power to get your business instant exposure to a massive audience.

There areĀ stories about people and businesses every day.

So how do you get theĀ news to do a storyĀ about you or something you are trying to advertise?

The news is ALWAYS on the hunt for information relevant to the audienceĀ theyĀ reach. There is a good chance they might want news tips from you.

If news reaches out to you first, that is probably your best bet,Ā but even then it's still not guaranteed to make the cut.Ā

If you are the one reaching out to the news, the first thing a reporter is going to want to know is what is the angle. Why is this information news? Is it useful for the audience you are trying to get in front of? Is it local? New? Special? Are people going to care about it? What's in it for the people reading it? If you don't know this clearly enough, you might want to think about that more before contacting them.

If you use some of the strategies to get your information into the news, I recommend that you have a plan already set up to capitalize on your exposure. This can look like gathering emails through your website content or providing an offer in person or on social media.

It helps to share your news article with your followers through email, and social media, frame the article, and hang it on the wall of your establishment. Have a plan in place to capture new leads that are researching you.

You don't have to do something sensational to get into the news.

If you follow these tips that have worked for me to get information into the news, your chances for success will be increased for some free news coverage.

5 insider tips to get into the news

1Ā -Ā Submit a press release

Include your name, phone number, business name, website, and any other relevant contact or links to relevant information across the top to help the reporter or editor looking at it get back to you easier.Ā Ā Each news media outlet, whether it be radio, tv or newspaper, or whatever, should have a website with a contact us or a news submission form.

Fill that out with all your info, and be sure to tell them why your news is important. If they are interested, you should hear back fairly quickly, and then you can get their email to send your press release to them directly or they might call you to set up an interview, and hopefully, this all leads to a story eventually being published or broadcasted.

Your press release should be summarized. The longer it goes on, the better the chances it will not be used due to space and time restrictions. Be careful about adding links or attachments; your email might not even be read when it goes straight to the junk or spam folder. The way to know if this happened or not is to call the place you are trying to get the info to, and ask if they got your email.Ā  You could also ask in your email that they let you know if they received it ok, if it's possible to get it in, and if they need anything else from you. Following up one time to get a confirmation that yes or no they got it, is OK!

2 - Write a story yourself and submit it to the news

This must be typed out in an editable Word document, preferably emailed. DO NOT write it out by hand and mail it. Some people actually do this, it's not time efficient for reporters to re-type your story.

If you can include some photos, people like to read stories with pictures. If you can save a reporter time by finding relevant images for your reader-submitted article, that will increase your odds they will pick up your story.

If reporters only need to do minor edits, your story it's way more likely to run than something they have to take a long time to re-write themselves.

Do not give them any sales pitches in your press release, or your information might be transferred to the paid advertising department. Ā

Stick to informational, conversational tones. Refer to tip #1 on how to find the right person to send your story to and follow up that it was received. You can also offer your expert advice or provide information in a field you are good at; they keep a list to call on experts when needed for story quotes.

3 - Keep your eyes peeledĀ for news submission requests.Ā

Best of Business, Letter to the Editor, Business Spotlight, On the Move, and Volunteer Spotlights, are all examples of reader-submitted content. Most news outlets have something like this. For instance, at the Greeley Tribune, any business in Greeley can submit 50 words written by them; if there is room, they will run it on the cover of the Business section. It can include a photo or a logo, a business name, an owner's name, how long they've been in business, a phone number, and a website. They will usually let you run these spotlights every six months when they have the room.

4 - Collaboration

I would suggest you read, watch or listen to news platforms, follow reporters relevant to your news submission, and contact them for a submission request. Ā Look on their website for the mainline and ask to be transferred to them by name. Ā When you get them on the phone, be ready to summarize why you're calling pretty quickly. Reporters are working on deadlines and are very busy.

Do try to build a rapport and be nice, but never try to bribe them; they have ethical rules to follow. They won't accept gifts or favors in trade for a story. Ā Being respectful goes a long way to encourage cooperation, though! Reporters & Publishers are overloaded with so much information, they can get picky about what stories to pick up. These stories need to go viral, for the livelihood of the whole team.

5 - Ā Calendars

News has a list of things to do and other calendars available to anyone to submit events for free, or for a very low cost. This adds value to readers when they can find things to do easier. I've noticed my submissions to calendars rarely are rejected and they run from the time I post it to the date of the event. These are much easier to get in unless you are trying to advertise something that isn't local; then your listing might show up online but not in print. Sometimes you must submit the event info via email to have it added to the printed calendars, and you must also submit the online calendar info separately to have it appear in print and online. Sometimes news will pick a few from the online calendar themselves to run in print calendars. Ā To submit calendar information, you will need to include an event description, date, location, times, cost, contact phone, and email. Sometimes you can upload or have a photo or logo and your website.

Those are my five expert tips to get into the news!

If you tried all of the above and it didn't work or the reporter you're talking to transfers you to the advertising department because they felt your pitch was a little too sale-sy, be nice to the advertising rep; they could be your greatest asset to have at a news company.

If you have information that MUST get in, be open-minded. You could do a native advertising campaign! Ā This is a form of paid content marketing. The better "advertorials" we can do make it look just like a genuine article so you can't tell the difference except for the disclaimer you have to put on that says it's been paid for.

The content will be your own or written by a professional writer to make it look just like an actual news article, and the bonus is, you can get it in the news when you want to. Ā Other benefits you don't get with free stories, are you get to see it, revise it, and approve it. AndĀ it's guaranteed to be published wherever you choose!

If you get knocked down, get back up.

Since the end of May 2017, I've been determined to start my own business so I could work remotely from home.

My why? My 3 young children. It started to get depressing being away from them 10 hours a day at my advertising job in another city working for a large news and media publishing company.

So I decided to focus on creating multiple sources of income.

Among them is this website which I started while working at my last job as a side hustle.

I monetized it with affiliate partners offers and Google Adwords, offering value in the form of information about marketing and advertising.

I started a podcast and monetized that, it's called The Boudica Show.

Whenever I would get knocked down and felt like I wanted to quit, I'd get back up, give my self a pep talk to keep going.

I'd meditate more. I would clean my desktop, office and my house. I would check my account more often and try to plan ahead better.

I would work on my mindset, tell myself during moments of self doubt when things weren't clicking and depression would set in, that Boudica Marketing is the greatest ad agency in the world.Ā

Then I would focus on being better, learning and perfecting my skills.

The little things helped. The small things. Like the time I got an email that my new podcast was shared on radio public.

I'm happy to report that things are progressing just great with my new marketing agency. And I'm continuing to take on new clients. I have had a few proposals fall through, but honestly, I felt it was meant to be because these were people that wanted free work and guaranteed results. I don't really want that kind of pressure.

I want to work with people that values and understands the benefits of social media marketing as a way to reach new clients for their business.

One of the streams of income that I've fallen into that's exploding right now isĀ social media management. I help my clients with engagement, customer service and even sales support using social media.

It's been amazing being there to see my kids grow up this last year. I had a few oh shit moments that made me frantically apply for jobs but then I realized every time I would say or do the opposite of what I should have. It came back to not being quite ready to give up.

I'm just going to keep being brave, trying new things, and working hard at this thing called being my own boss.

Are you on the same journey as me? I'd love to connect with you. Listen to my podcast and join me inside a group. See below.

Ā  "The Boudica Show" can be found on Apple Podcast, Pocket Cast, and Radio Public.

Here are a few of the groups and pages I run.

7 ways to brand your business With Boudica

Boudica Marketing logo
boudicamarketing.com

There is more to branding than having an easy to recognize logo across all your advertising channels, matching images, similar color scheme, a name people can say and remember, a tagline that tells people what your values and benefits to them are.

It's also how you go about nurturing your customers for brand recognition, loyalty, referrals, repeat visits and multiple purchases.

And about how people feel about you when they think about you. What they say about you to people they know.

Branding ensures when people are ready to buy your services, they already know who you are and what makes you special. Branding builds trust. Ā I put together 7 ways you can start branding your business to grow awareness and get leads for your business.

pexels-photo-266176

#1. It all starts with a plan. DetermineĀ your audience, what their behaviors, wants and needs are.

2.Ā You should have a clear goal of the results you want from your advertising, and the current state of your business. Ā Analyze your strengths, challenges, competition, and threats.

3. Sales Cycle.Ā Depending on what your industry is, you could have a long sales cycle or a short one. How you position yourself in the market will depend on these factors.

william-iven-11250

#4 Freshen up your online presence. Create matching social media profiles with high-quality images. You really don't have to be everywhere. It's ok to focus on 2-3 platforms your audience spends the most time on.Ā When you set up multiple platforms you can gather your followers wherever they spend time, allowing them to interact with you in real time to improve the customer service experience. You'll want to be able to be found online by the people seeking you out toĀ serviceĀ them. Social media is indexed by search engines, so the more live your channels, content, and reviews are, the higher your position will be in the search results.

Many social media platforms like LinkedIn allow you to download your list of contacts, giving you a nice start to an email list to start inviting people to your pages and asking for reviews.

#5 Social Listening

Set up a keyword search and alerts so you can respond to any mentions for possible sales opportunities or chances to respond and share any reviews.

#6 Referrals.Ā The highest form of flattery is a client that comes to you and says they heard about you from a friend. The internet is the ultimate form of word of mouth. Whenever you have public reviews and comments, good or bad, be sure to respond quickly, professionally, publicly, and offer a resolution. Many will seek you out online to resolve any of their issues or rave about your great service.Ā When people have a bad experience offline, they are more likely to share this with their friends online than a good experience. Ignoring your fans, trolls or haters comments that pop up online can be harmful to your reputation, and hurt your chances of getting new or repeat business. Your potential clients can see how you handle their complaint. If you handled it well, it will boost your trust and credibility.

john-schnobrich-520022#7 Community involvement.

Supporting a cause, or starting one that solves a need in your community can instantly put your brand in front of a huge network of talented, giving people in a positive way.

Share everything with your local media and other publishers relevant to your industry in the form of a press release.Ā  For more on how to do this see 5 insider tips on how to get in the news. Create a physical sales funnel with a bounce back offer so people you are reaching "offline" can connect with you later. This could be a sign up for a contest, coupon or special time-bound offer that they submit their information willingly to you. Create custom ads, targeting your ideal audience with compelling images that look like them. Create ad copy that energizes them and makes them feel something. Create a call to actions that feed into a sales funnel you created with your marketing strategy.

WordPress is one of the most versatile website-building tools you can use to create your internet home base.

How to do affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online by promoting other people's products or services.

Here are the steps on how to do affiliate marketing:

  1. Choose a niche. The first step is to choose a niche that you are interested in and knowledgeable about. This will help you create relevant and engaging content for your audience.
  2. Find affiliate programs. Once you have chosen a niche, you need to find affiliate programs offering products or services you believe in. Many different affiliate programs are available, so you should be able to find one that fits your needs.
  3. Create content. The next step is to create content promoting the products or services you are affiliated with. This content can be in the form of blog posts, articles, videos, or social media posts.
  4. Promote your content. Once you have created content, you need to promote it so that people can see it. You can promote your content on social media, email marketing, or paid advertising.
  5. Track your results. It's essential to track your results to see what is working and what is not. You can track your results using Google Analytics or another analytics tool.

Affiliate marketing can be a great way to make money online, but it takes time and effort to be successful. By following these steps, you can increase your chances of success.

Here are some additional tips for affiliate marketing:

  • Build an audience.Ā The more people you have following you, the more likely you are to make sales. You can build an audience by creating high-quality content, promoting your content on social media, and engaging with your audience.
  • Be honest and transparent.Ā  If you promote a product or service you don't believe in, your audience will be able to tell and will be less likely to trust you.
  • Offer value. The best way to get people to click on your affiliate links is to offer them value. This could mean providing helpful information, sharing exciting stories, or giving away free resources.
  • Be patient.Ā It takes time to build a successful affiliate marketing business. Don't expect to make a lot of money overnight. Just keep creating great content, promoting your content, and building your audience, and you will eventually start to see results.

The Future of Virtual Reality and AI in Marketing: A Creative Report

Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are rapidly changing the face of Marketing.

Shopping in the future

Providing businesses with new and innovative ways to engage with customers. Lets explore the future of VR and AI in marketing, examining their potential impact and their benefits to businesses.

Virtual Reality in Marketing

Ai & VR Advertising
The future of advertising with AI & VR.

Virtual Reality is a technology that allows users to immerse themselves in a simulated environment. It offers a unique opportunity for businesses to create interactive and engaging experiences that can capture the attention of their target audience. The use of VR in marketing can be classified into the following categories:

Product Demonstration

Virtual reality is the future of marketing.

VR can be used to demonstrate products and services in a highly interactive and immersive way. This can be especially useful for businesses that sell complex or expensive products, where explaining their features and benefits in a traditional marketing setting can be challenging.

Virtual Events

VR Events
VR will be the future of attending events.

Virtual events can be created using VR technology, allowing businesses to host immersive experiences that can be attended from anywhere in the world. This can be a cost-effective way to hold otherwise impossible events due to logistical challenges.

Brand Awareness

VR can be used to create unique and memorable brand experiences which can help businesses stand out in a crowded market.

By immersing customers in a brand experience, businesses can build stronger connections with their target audience.

Artificial Intelligence in Marketing

Using VR for marketing
Advertising with VR

Artificial Intelligence refers to the ability of machines to learn and perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence.

AI is being used in marketing in several ways, including:

Personalization

11 pro tips for advertising on a shoestring budget.

Are you desperate for more customers but don't have money to advertise?

I have heard this time and time again.

If people don't know who you are or how to find you, how can they buy from you?

Advertising can in some cases be a tax-deductible business expense. (Talk to a CPA).

It's an investment to grow your business.

Here are 11 of my favorite ways to advertise on a shoestring budget.Ā Ā

  1. Events. Plan or attend an event. If you organize an event, recruit other businesses to set up a table or sponsor you to help you with the costs. If you provide enough value, you can charge admission to cover advertising.
  2. Ā Create a Deal. This is a no up front cost advertising program. You may have heard of Groupon or Living Social.Ā  The publisher of your deal will keep a portion of the buy now purchases in exchange for promoting your deal and business to its audience of people that signed up to get discounted deals, you keep a portion of everything they offer brings in, and money is automatically deposited into your bank account. Experiences and packages work well for this kind of advertising. The purpose isn't really to make money but to get new clients that you can turn into return customers.
  3. Free Calendars. If you have an event you need to promote, you can usually post it for free on "things to do" calendars that can be found on social media, local news websites, newspapers, radio, broadcast stations, and magazines. Be prepared for sales calls, but it's free to submit the info.Ā  This isn't a guaranteed form of advertising, it's up to them to approve the post, and they can decide when and how long it runs for.Ā Ā If the info gets picked up, it's a great way to get your name out there to a wider audience for free.
  4. Press release. Send your information to all the relevant news sources that may have an audience you are trying to reach. To learn how to make one, read my article 5 insider tips on how to get into the news.
  5. A website. Having an online presence builds trust. When your website is easy to find, relevant to the user, mobile-friendly, and easy to navigate, you will show up higher in searches when people are searching online to purchase or do research. It used to be that you had to spend thousands of dollars and tons of time to make changes to get it just right, and then after that, it must constantly be updated and optimized to be found easily online. Now, you can have aĀ  professional website that's easy to set up, update and optimize yourself. This is one way you can grow awareness for your business.
  6. Ā Social Media. It's free to start a business page on social media channels and create groups to gather your tribe of people that want to connect to you in real time on a more personal level. Your customers, fans, and followers want to hear from you and interact with you online. They want to share your information with their friends and leave reviews. What are you waiting for? Social media posts show up on internet searches, post content to be top of mind and be found easily online. Share pictures, updates, and offers, and ask for referrals using your social media pages. Use hashtags with each post that is relevant, and be sure to interact on your business page with your target audiences as much as possible with engagement on posts, comments, and shares to grow your digital presence faster.
  7. Ā Google Adwords. Reach your exact target audience while they are online researching in the buying mode. You can run a search ad or display ad to be seen on search results as well as on websites your target audience spends time on. You have control over the budget and the ad copy. There are keyword planner tools you can use with Adwords to help you with insights into what people are asking about online to help you plan content for your ads.
  8. Paid social media display ads.Ā Target your ads and unique message to audiences with specific behaviors, interests, income levels, zip codes, buying behaviors, and more. Ads will work better if they have been written for the right target audience, with images that look like them. Your ads will cost less if your page is getting a lot of engagement first, so be sure to send your ad out for a test to your best engagers for an opinion before you decide to put money into boosting it. Use the Ads Manager function of Facebook for the best targeting capabilities.
  9. Ā Video Marketing. Live video will be the #1 way to reach your audience in terms of visibility. You can use social platforms like Youtube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook Live. You can also share your homemade video from your phone on your pages and with news outlets to make it go viral. Add captions and embed your live broadcast or recorded video on your website's home page for an SEO boost. Email it out to your list using mail chimp, embedding the video into the email with lots of keyword-rich content and hashtags included.
  10. Email marketing. Continuously build up your list of email subscribers, and schedule regular emails to reach and engage them. Ā To grow your list, you will need a strategy to entice them to give up their info willingly. One way is to offer something of value in exchange for the information. Try to keep it simple. Include this in your marketing strategy. You can offer links to your products and services to people that know, like, and trust you. Google Forms is free to set up a form that you can use to capture email data. You can also do a form for free inside Hubspot, which manages customers' information and allows you to email them easily. If you have an email for your website, you can use Mailchimp or Hubspot to make and schedule great emails for your business using your list.
  11. Ā SEO. Take a peek at keywordtool.io and check out the long-tail keywords your customers search for, and incorporate them into your content. This helps you show up in google searches. This works great when you explain the problem, how you can solve it, and give people a way to buy. There are three kinds of searches that people normally do. A. ResearchingĀ  B. Information, and C. intent to buy. Be sure you have the right call to action for your audiences, depending on what their search intent shows based on the keywords they are searching for.

Hope this gave you some good ideas on how to advertise for free or at little cost!
